I've never trained before. Do I need any experience to start?

None at all. Most people who walk into 4Eighty have zero martial arts background. Our beginner classes are built for day-one students, whether you're an adult stepping on the mat for the first time or a parent signing up your kid. You'll learn the fundamentals step by step in a supportive environment. The best way to start is to book a free trial class and see if it's a fit.

What should I wear to my first class?

Comfortable athletic clothing works fine for your first session: a t-shirt and shorts or leggings without zippers, buttons, or pockets. If you're trying a gi class, we can usually lend you one to start. Bring a water bottle, come with clean feet and trimmed nails, and leave the jewelry at home. Same goes for kids.

Do I need to be in shape before I start?

No. You get in shape by training, not before it. You set your own pace, take breaks when you need them, and build conditioning naturally as you go. Plenty of people start jiu-jitsu specifically to get fit, lose weight, or move better.

Is jiu-jitsu safe? Will I get hurt?

Jiu-jitsu is a contact sport, but it's one of the safer martial arts because you can practice techniques at full effort without striking. Safety is our priority: you control the intensity, tapping out ends any exchange immediately, and beginners are paired thoughtfully and supervised closely. Most soreness is the good kind.

How often should I train to see progress?

Two to three classes a week is the sweet spot for steady progress while your body adapts, and that holds true for both adults and kids. Consistency matters more than intensity, so showing up regularly beats cramming. Once you've had your trial and settled in, many students naturally add more sessions as their conditioning and comfort grow.

Do you offer a trial class?

Yes. We offer a free trial class so you can experience 4Eighty before committing to anything. It's the easiest way to meet our coaches, watch how classes run, and get a feel for the room. Adults can jump into a beginner session, and kids can try an age-appropriate class. Just reach out to book a time and we'll get you set up.

Do you have classes for kids?

We do. Our kids program teaches jiu-jitsu in a way that's fun, structured, and age-appropriate, building confidence, discipline, and focus along with real skills. Kids learn to handle themselves while making friends and burning off energy. A free trial class is a great low-pressure way to see if your child enjoys it before you commit.
